Data Reports

We are offering data reports for geographical zones contained in, containing, or adjacent to the area you specify. Currently, Demographic & Housing Report and Quality of Life reports are available.

The data comes from the US Census 2000 and other data sources, ameliorated, cross-compared, formatted and packaged into an html file set for best viewing with a Web browser and into three additinal data formats (XML, CSV, ASCII) for easy loading into a database or processing with other tools.

Each demographic report contains 3000-8000 data fields.

Where applicable, the html reports are enhanced with aerial photo images overlaid with geographical zones of the report, as well as hyperlinks to the TerraFly system for additional information services.

Sample html reports:

You are welcome to specify the area of your interest by entering (1) street address (or geographical coordinates) and optionally (2) the size of the image (width/height of the image or geographical boundaries):

Comparative Demographic and Housing Reports are prepared for geographical zones (census block groups and larger census zones: census tracts, zipcodes, municipalities, metropolitan areas, county subdivisions, counties, congressional districts, states) containing or adjacent to the area you have specified.

Three levels of the demographic reports are available, depending on the granularity of geographical division requested:
1. The Fine Granularity Report contains data on census block groups, census tracts, zipcodes, municipalities, metropolitan areas, county subdivisions, counties, congressional districts, and states overlapping the dispensed area.
2. The Medium Granularity Report contains data on zipcodes, municipalities, metropolitan areas, county subdivisions, counties, congressional districts, and states overlapping the dispensed area.
3. The Coarse Granularity Report contains data on metropolitan areas, counties, congressional districts, and states overlapping the dispensed area.

Quality of Life report is prepared for zip codes containing or adjacent to the area you have dispensed from TerraFly.

Each report comes in four formats, namely:

  • HTML (best for viewing in a Web browser);
  • XML (extensible markup language);
  • CSV (comma-separated values);
  • ASC (plain text ASCII).

The report in HTML format is designed to assist viewing data via a standard Internet browser. Reports in other formats are designed for loading data into a database for further querying and processing. Please note that due to the complexity of data, some files in CSV format will be trimmed if opened by Microsoft Excel. For the same reason some XML files will be slowly processed if opened via a standard Internet browser. Metadata (the column names for fields in the table) is self-descriptive and is stored inside the data files.

The dispensed sample area is Miami Beach, Florida; the TerraAtlas of the same area can be seen here.

The Quality of Life report is shipped via Free Download option as a compressed archieve file in ZIP format.

If you have Microsoft Windows installed on your computer and the version is older than Windows XP or you have a Macintosh you will need additional program to extract files from ZIP archive. For Microsoft Windows we suggest to use WinZip utility which can be downloaded here. For Macintosh users we suggest to use ZipIt utility which can be downloaded here.

The archieve contains four index files, namely

  • index.html
  • index.xml
  • index.csv
  • index.asc
and a set of files which contain subreports in HTML format to assist easy browsing; index.xml, index.csv, index.asc have all the data in one file of the corresponding format, while index.html has only the table of contents and references to the HTML subreports.
